movies.aol.com has a “Movies, Showtimes & Ticket Search” tool where you can enter your ZIP code and go from there.

There is also an advanced search feature that allows you to search by movie title, by actors name, by genre, and by MPAA rating.

You can also do an advanced search for finding theaters. The tool allows you to search for theaters by distance, by theater amenities, or by theater chain.

Theater amenities that you can select include: online ticketing, handicap access, hearing-impaired services, enhanced sound, and enhanced seating.

There are dozens of theater chains, among the list is: Landmark Theatres, AMC Theatres, Cinemark Theatres, Mann Theatres, and United Artists Theatres.

movies.yahoo.com also has location based listings for movie theaters near you.

You can use the Yahoo Showtimes and Tickets tool to find a local theater. Enter your city and state or ZIP code to get local showtimes.

I often find most of these tools work better when using a ZIP code, since they are better targeted and there are no duplicates like there are with cities.

So for example if I do a search using the ZIP code 90291 (Venice, California) I’ll get a listing of theaters in my area which includes: AMC Loews Marina 6, UA Marina Del Rey, AMC Santa Monica 7, Laemmle’s Monica Fourplex, AMC Loews Broadway 4, and the Mann Criterion, among other theaters listed.

Below the listing of theaters is a database of movies playing in the area. I like this since I’m more interested in finding a movie I want to see and then finding out if the theater is near me.

There are dozens of such tools on different movie theater web sites. We’ll put together a list and post them here and will eventually get around to posting our own tool so that you’ll have one more way to find movies near you.

Answer: If you don’t know what movie theaters are located near you (or what movies are currently playing in your area), there are several ways you can search online.

Use terms like “movie theaters” or “movies” followed by your location (zip or city and state). So, for example if you are in Marina del Rey, California and you’re looking to see what theaters are in your area you can go to your favorite search engine (for this example we’ll use Google) and type in “movies 90292” and for comparison let’s try “theaters Marina del Rey” and see what kind of results we get.

The search for “movies 90292″ brings us results directly from Google that state “Showtimes for CA 90292″ and when we click on that the results page gives us the following movies and information…

There is a lot more information and a whole bunch of movies listed but you get the point, you can get a lot of movie information by just typing the term movie or movies along with your ZIP code (if you know what ZIP code area you are in).

What was cool about the Google page was that there are also reviews on the movies, trailers so you can watch videos, and listings from the Internet movie database (IMDB).

When searching for “Theaters Marina del Rey” we got very different results. In fact, we didn’t get any direct Google information for movie showtimes at all. What we did get is a list of web sites related to the movie theater industry. Company pages for places like AMC, United Artists, UA Marina del Rey 6, were in the top 10 results.

Some of those sites brought up movie listings but not as good as what we got from the direct Google results. We’ll checked back on this topic again soon and see if there have been any changes.
